Gear Up & Get Ahead [grades 8–11]

Westport Continuing Education presents an ambitious roster of college and career-ready summer programs for high school students. As a division of Westport Public Schools, we share the mission to empower and inspire students to reach their full potential as lifelong learners and socially responsible contributors to our global community. We achieve this by fostering critical and creative thinking and collaborative problem solving. 

Gear Up for Algebra 1 [entering 8]
Monday - Thursday: BMS & Fridays Online
Content: The Gear up for Algebra 1 course covers essential mathematical concepts that are essential for success in Algebra 1 in grade 8.

Locations: A combination of in-person at Bedford Middle School and online through Google Meet.

Requirements:

• Virtual attendance is mandatory with a maximum of 2 absences; in-person attendance is mandatory with a maximum of 2 absences.

• Students must earn a minimum of 85% on the final exam for entrance into Algebra 1 in 8th grade.

Gear Up for Algebra 2 [entering 9-11]
Revisit the most important Algebra skills to get ready for Algebra 2! Devote just a few hours a day for ONE week of your summer working with a Staples High School teacher who has taught Algebra 1 and 2 for many years. This class will offer a personalized experience for students with an extensive review of the topics from Algebra 1 so that you are in good shape to start off the year in Algebra 2! There will be classwork and optional practice to be done at home and in between classes. For students enrolled in Algebra 2 for the Fall 2025 

Gear Up for Science Olympiad [entering 6-9]
This summer experience will help get you ready for the fall, when Science Olympiad releases new rules and teams tackle the 23 STEM-aligned events in pairs; building devices for on-site testing, studying for core knowledge challenges, and preparing for rigorous hands-on lab experiments. Learn about the different events, explore how build events work, and learn techniques to prepare for paper and pencil events. Students from outside of Westport are welcome.
